The Dubai World Championship is a play-off for golf being held for the very first time on the European Tour. The championship started on 19th November and went on till 22nd November 2009. It was organized on the Earth course at Jumeirah Golf Estates in Dubai, UAE.
The event is the climax of the new season long contest The Race to Dubai which replaces The European Tour Order of Merit. It also takes in The Tour’s most venerable tournaments, the Major Championships and the World Golf Championships.
Leading Contestants
· Rory McIlroy is leading with 2,538,449 Euros ($3.78 million)
· Britons Lee Westwood being second in the lead, third being German Martin Kaymer followed by Ross Fisher, the fourth; all can stop at top of the inaugural Race to reach Dubai money list on Sunday.
· The second youngest winner of the order of merit after Spain’s Seve Ballesteros (20) will be McIlroy(19). This Northern Irishman has also achieved the honor of being the youngest player in the 58-man field.
· Westwood is the only previous achiever in 2000.
Ultimate Prize
The world’s best golfers will race for US$ 7.5 million which is the prize money on the greens of Earth. “Golden Mile of Golf” is its last four holes may probably choose the winner of this finale to the 2009 European Tour Season.
Bonus Pool
The top 15 leaders of the event will share another US$ 7.5 million bonus. The new top European contender will earn $1.5 million and an exemption from seven-year tour.
